The thursday murder club
This is a spec project. From the novel, and soon to be feature film, The Thursday Murder Club I’ve identified five graphic design props and created each one. They include: branding, coasters and Jazz Night poster for Le Pont Noir, Cut To The Chase newsletter, the community notice board of Coopers Chase, Joyce’s Diary, and the menu for the Coopers Chase restaurant.
Police File
This 1970’s police file for the murder of Annie Madeley includes a police report, a coroner’s report, a form from the medical examiner’s office and a letter from the Chief’s Constable’s office. All done on slightly different paper stock, including paper that was aged in the oven and some real life onion skin. I also used my daughter’s typewriter and a school folder she was probably done with. When learning a new skill, use what you have! This police file is the very first prop in the book, but I didn’t have the stomach to include the photos Joyce and Elizabeth discuss.
Joyce’s Diary
I was all set to create a physical diary for Joyce. Couldn’t wait to pick out the perfect journal and imitate the hand writing of an 80 year old woman. However, when re-reading, I discovered that when Joanna stays over and Joyce is journaling, Joyce has to “type quietly so as not to wake Joanna”. So it seems that Joyce really is with the times and types her diary. While she could use a typewriter that seems unlikely, based on how often the Coopers Chase residents talk about iPads. And, we know Joyce has a laptop. So, a rose gold Mac Book Air seemed appropriate for Joyce’s diary.
